Arkonviox.com is a website dedicated to information related to the Ecco the Dolphin series popularized by Sega's 16-bit Sega Genesis console.
• How old is the Ecco the Dolphin community?
The first large Ecco the Dolphin website began on January 1st 2000, it was called the Undercaves and was created by Jason Grindley who was known in the Ecco the Dolphin community as blackfin. Arkonviox.com was a former competitor of the Undercaves and eventually the two sites merged together with Arkonviox.com becoming the Undercaves successor. Arkonviox.com is the oldest Ecco the Dolphin website on the Internet and the most fan contributed Ecco the Dolphin website on the Internet.
ECCO THE DOLPHIN
• How many different Ecco the Dolphin games are there?
Ecco the Dolphin has been ported to many systems over the years, the most widely ported game has been the 16-bit Sega Genesis classic Ecco the Dolphin. At the time of this writing there are two canons for Ecco the Dolphin, the original universe created by Ed Annunziata and the Ecco, Defender of the Future universe created by David Brin.
The original Ecco the Dolphin games come in many flavors: the 16-bit Sega Genesis/MegaDrive version, an 8-bit Game Gear/Master System version and a PC version featuring higher resolution graphics. There is also a Sega CD version that featured an Ecco the Dolphin computer generated movie! as well as orchestrated music. Ecco, Defender of the Future was originally released for the Sega Dreamcast, it features a new story and a fully stunning 3D environment.
• Is Ecco, Defender of the Future a continuation of the original Ecco the Dolphin series?
NO! It is a whole new universe created by Uplift author David Brin, it has nothing to do with the original Ecco the Dolphin games.
• What ever happened to Ecco the Dolphin 3?
There was an Ecco the Dolphin 3 planned, Ecco's original creator Ed Annunziata had dedicated a whole notebook to an Ecco the Dolphin 3 storyline, but with all the changes happening with Sega moving over to a new console the game never made it to the development phase. Ed has teased on his twitter account of releasing a new Ecco game for Xbox 360, but with his companies record of releasing any new games, it's difficult to say if we should get our hopes up.
• What does the secret password in Ecco 2: The Tides of Time do?
According to Ecco's creator Ed Annunziata, the secret password was designed to unlock something special in Ecco the Dolphin 3. Since Ecco the Dolphin 3 never made it to the development phase we will never know what was planned, but for sure the password was intended for a third Ecco the Dolphin.
