Ecco Fan Game Round Up Part Three
07-23-2009 by Johnny L. de Alba

Ecco: The Shattered Ring
Ecco: The Shattered Ring was a game created Gustaff XIII using RPG Maker. It is one of the oldest known examples of an Ecco fan game and like other Ecco fan games it was never completed. Encountering enemies leads to a role playing game style battle where you skillfully have to choose your attack.

Game play is a little jaggidy and the game itself is full of bugs. It's a surprise the game still works, just keep in mind its unfinished and there is not much after the first level (if thats what you want to call it). You got to admire the battle scenes drawn in crayon or colored pencil. If he needed a graphics designer he could have stumbled into a second grade class room.

My only complaint about the game is the movement, Ecco doesn't navigate around with fluidity or can even jump out of the water. Its because of the limitations of RPG Builder that make it hard to incorporate. Some of the barriers like the glyphs are a little off and even the waters surface, its alot like running into invisible squares.

In all fairness there is nothing wrong with this game and it would of been fun to play had it ever been finished. Gustaff has the honor of pretty much being the first to make an Ecco fan game and he'd probably be surprised its survived on the internet as long as it has.

Vortex Assault
Vortex Assault is an Ecco the Dolphin fan game created by Okura. Your job is to basically shoot Vortex, Jellyfish and anything else that drives Ecco nuts. The game was built using Game Maker and is brilliant because it doesn't try to be a fancy full fledged game - it is simple and fun.

At the end of the level is supposibly a boss, but I never made it that far. It would of been great to see this concept expanded upon. In any case Okura wins the award for best Ecco the Dolphin fan game, this game - as small as it is - has plenty of replay value.
