The Ecco 2 X11 prototype was further progress of the developmental process compared to the the Ecco 2 "Alpha" prototype.
Many of the levels from the final version of Ecco 2 are present in X11. The level "Fish Morph" has the overall structure of a giant block-like maze but lacks the visual details of it's final counterpart "Fish City".
The Hungarian developers created objects used as concepts and story progression whose messages were poorly translated to English.
The X11 prototype is not as revolutionary as it's "Alpha" counterpart except in level "Billiard" where Ecco demonstrates a new sonar ability. Using a combination of the CHARGE and SONAR buttons; Ecco creates a sonar that fly's through his enemies killing them as it passes and like a boomerang returns killing whatever it missed. According to Tails this hidden ability was in the "Alpha" prototype and can be re-created using Jorge's Ecco 2 Level Editor.
Finding the Vortex Queen level in X11 can be troublesome since all the levels are named differently. Defeating the Vortex Queen is the same as it is in the final except for the new dialog where she asks Ecco to spare her life. This was a story element that was removed that helped explain the strange creature that emerged after defeating the Queen.
Jorge found a hidden sprite in X11 of "Roo", the Kangaroo character from Streets of Rage. It is unknown what the intention of adding this was other then being a mistake or to borrow data from Streets of Rage to be reused in Ecco 2.

There are three tracks in X11 that never made it into the final. These tracks are variations of one another that sound like they were created using the original track found in Sky Tides in the final version.
The Ecco 2 X11 prototype is playable but some of the levels will require cheating. Some of the levels will look the same as their final counterparts while others will be appear larger or incomplete. The X11 is the closet to the final version of Ecco 2 and combined with the original prototype help build a story of how game development works.
