Cetacean Roleplaying Game
03-07-2009 by Johnny L. de Alba

It's been almost ten years since Ecco, Defender of the Future was released, this is a record broken after the previous Ecco 2, The Tides of Time - a game that to this day remains lacking a worthy sequel. If there ever will be another Ecco game, it will more likely be a completely rewritten game with a new story, loosely based on the original Ecco, kinda like Ecco, Defender of the Future. Ecco 2 for the Genesis/Megadrive was not succeeded by another Ecco game for at least 6 years.

For those who've given up their wait for another Ecco the Dolphin, I offer hope. Myself and several others have started our own role-playing game loosely based on Ecco the Dolphin. It's not exactly Ecco the Dolphin, but it contains some elements and themes that you would find in a traditional Ecco game. For example, there are crystal glyphs with riddles to solve, and time machines.

The name of the game is A Stone in Time, Conquest; you start the game by creating a profile for your character and selecting a species. Once you've created your profile, you enter the world and search for a pod to join. You are allowed to claim a territory and gather members for your own pod. Eventually you'll uncover secrets from the sunken ruins that will allow your character to become something more, and grow your pod into a fierce clan.

The games not like a traditional game that you would play for the PlayStation or X-Box, it is a play-by-post, text-based role-playing-game played on a message board. This means everything is done on the message board, you become a writer in a sense, polishing your skills in the art of story telling, all under the moderation of a game master.

The game was designed to have a almost 8-bit/16-bit feel to it, most of the players post as their characters using small sprites. As you play the game, you'll eventually find yourself drawn in, forgetting your writing a mere story and more focused on being apart of a social structure.

The story takes place in the year 3797 AD, your character had wondered into the seas of Agartha from other seas beyond. 10 years prior, Agartha was protected by a giant energy field that blocked outsiders from entering. With this protective barrier down, the new arrivals are finding the previous inhabitants have left behind ruins of their ancient cities. There are tribes of cetaceans who've lived in Agartha prior, who tell tails of great storms that devastated the seas 500 years ago. Everything in the story is linked, as secrets are uncovered, a lost truth becomes known and liberating Agartha will eventually become everyone's goal.
